Still winter, but not so bad. The snow we got last night was amazingly beautiful! Winter can be a downer, but snowfalls like this just take your breath away. It was like waking up to a dreamy wonderland. Delightfully for picture taking, and despite the 40 F temperatures, the snow still clung to much of the landscape.
When it snows, the colder temperatures inhibit snowflakes from clumping together as they form and fall from the sky. Picture the now well known image of the six pointed snowflake. When the temperature is too cold, they fall and bang into each other breaking off parts of their arms and legs and end up being quite deformed once they hit ground. Usually snowfall in the dead of winter isn't very spectacular snowflake-wise and resembles white bites or particles than a flake.
But last night we got to see what happens when the air temperature is on the warm side (the last few days have seen above freezing daytime temps). In their free fall the snowflakes could bond together. The snowflakes joined together to became huge snow clumps. Seeing this kind of snowfall is almost magical.
