Enough is enough, of these crazy tomato seedlings inside the house! It's time that they spend their first night outside- their first sleepover with reality.
Now before you judge me as hasty or cruel, these tomato seedlings have been slowly hardened off for... two weeks? It seems like forever. Today they were outside since 11:00am. They have been spending at least 6-8 hours outdoors in some form or the other and usually in direct sunlight. It's time. I can't handle shoehorning these guys unnecessarily, ONE more time, onto the seed starting shelf inside the house. Doing so seems to cause so much damage to the poor leaves of these plants. Stress!!!!
To make matters more chaotic, the other day when I brought them in for the night... they had an accident. Somehow, perhaps because I did not push the seed tray adequately back onto the shelf (the plants are so bushy), one of the trays... *gulp* ... fell off the shelf! I heard a commotion from the kitchen and ran right over as soon as I saw what had happened. (I'm pretty sure I screamed- everything happened so quickly!)
The good thing was that in our poor crowded living room, there just happened to be a small end table positioned next to the seed shelf that broke the fall of the tray. The bad thing, besides the poor seedlings getting manhandled to save them from a complete fall to the ground... was that the tray also, sort of, fell into a freshly washed and folded basket of laundry. As I had JUST watered them all, a good deal of water and soil both drained into the basket of clean laundry.
Oh my goodness.
The stress, it's just too much, and it is time. Tonight is going to be a pretty warm night as it is 57 F now at 10pm and the forecast is putting tonights low at around 52 F. The next week is going to all 70's to lower 80's.
Now with a whole shelf free, I will be able to start more seeds! But that's a story for another time.
